Tropical getaways are incomplete without a little time spent under the sea. I intend on taking a boat from Matira beach to one of the nearby Coral Gardens. I want to split this experience into halves. The first half I will be exploring the northern point and just swim around the reef faces. Since this will be my first time snorkelling I want to ease into it. Once I have opened up to snorkelling and become more comfortable with it, I will explore Matira Point on the east side of the beach and head towards the northern edge of the barrier reef. The locals refer to this area as the “Aquarium”. It would be an interesting opportunity to explore an underwater ecosystem that is as beautiful as it is diverse. Through snorkelling, I will be able to spot butterfly fish, parrot fish, puffer fish, picasso trigger fish, snapper, tan, goat fish, grouper, trumpet fish and zebra unicorn fish. I am beyond excited to learn about these fish and spot some when I go snorkelling. I do have the option of snorkeling with stingrays and sharks as well. Although I am a bit scared, I probably won’t have an opportunity like this again. I have always had a keen interest in animals and learning about them. This would be a great opportunity for me to see many exotic fish and dangerous predators in their natural habitat and become a part of their world. Additionally, I have always wanted to go snorkeling and this is the perfect place to do it! After all, my goal for this trip is to explore as many new things as I can.
