It is hard to believe a heavenly island like Bora Bora is the remnants and surrounding area of two formerly active volcanoes – Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu. Mount Otemanu is the highest point in Bora Bora, reaching heights of 727 meters. The volcano with its rugged black face contrasting with lush green jungles and sparkling blue sea is a marvel sight to stare at itself. I would like to go hiking around the mountain. Also I would like to scale the mountain and as much as I would like to – I can’t. As a matter of fact, no one has ever successfully scaled the mountain, this is mostly due to the fact the brittle volcanic rock is too fragile to support a person’s weight. As much as I regret not conquering Mount Otemanu, I can do the next best thing. Tours are offered by guides or 4x4 vehicles to explore the base – as mentioned earlier I will opt for the more natural approach as this allows me to become intimate with nature and enjoy the scenery. Another reason I am interested in hiking Mount Otemanu is to find scattered altars. An island like Bora Bora is a great place to establish a deeper connection with nature. I want to be able to connect with Bora Bora and its culture as well, and venturing through these altars scattered from the ancient past is an excellent way to do so.
